Step 3: Start & Succeed
You get the job. Now the real work begins, and we're with you every step of the way. Weekly check-ins for 12 weeks to make sure you're settling in, handling challenges, and building confidence.
What happens:
  • Week 1: First-day nerves, settling in
  • Weeks 2-4: Learning the role, building routine
  • Weeks 5-8: Gaining confidence, handling challenges
  • Weeks 9-12: Becoming independent, long-term success
Timeline: 12 weeks of support, then ongoing as needed.

What Kind of Work Will You Be Doing?

Young warehouse operative organizing stock and moving boxes in distribution center Entry-Level
🏭 WAREHOUSE OPERATIVE
What You'll Do: General warehouse duties including picking orders, packing items, loading and unloading deliveries, moving stock, and keeping the warehouse organized and safe.
Shift Patterns:
  • Day shifts (6am-2pm or 8am-4pm)
  • Afternoon shifts (2pm-10pm)
  • Some roles include weekend work
Experience Needed: None. Full training provided.
Perfect For: First-time warehouse workers looking to learn the basics and build a solid foundation.
 
  • Pay: £12.21-£12.70 per hour
Young picker packer using handheld scanner to pick orders in warehouse Entry-Level
📦 PICKER/PACKER
What You'll Do: Using handheld scanners to pick customer orders from warehouse locations, packing items securely for dispatch, quality checking, and ensuring orders are accurate and on time.
Shift Patterns:
  • Day shifts (most common)
  • Night shifts available (higher pay: £15.09+ per hour)
  • Overtime opportunities
Experience Needed: None. Training on scanning systems provided.
Perfect For: Detail-oriented people who like keeping busy and working to targets.
  • Pay: £12.50-£13.74 per hour
Young forklift driver operating FLT truck moving pallets in warehouse Skilled
🚜 FORKLIFT DRIVER
What You'll Do: Operating counterbalance or reach forklifts to move pallets, load/unload lorries, stack goods safely, and support warehouse operations.
Shift Patterns:
  • Day, afternoon, or night shifts
  • Rotating shift patterns in some roles
  • Overtime widely available
Experience Needed: Valid forklift license (counterbalance or reach). Some employers offer on-the-job training and license funding for the right candidate.
Perfect For: Those with forklift experience or willing to get licensed. Higher pay and career progression opportunities.
  • Pay: £13.29-£14.00 per hour
Young stock controller checking inventory and conducting stock counts with tablet Entry-Level
📋 STOCK CONTROLLER / INVENTORY ASSISTANT
What You'll Do: Managing stock levels, conducting inventory checks, updating computer systems, investigating stock discrepancies, and ensuring accurate records for smooth warehouse operations.
Shift Patterns:
  • Typically day shifts (Monday-Friday)
  • Some weekend work may be required
Experience Needed: Basic computer skills helpful but not essential. Training provided on warehouse management systems.
Perfect For: Organized, detail-focused people who like problem-solving and working with data.
  • Pay: £12.50-£13.50 per hour
Young goods-in operative receiving and checking deliveries at warehouse loading bay Entry-Level
📥 GOODS-IN OPERATIVE
What You'll Do: Receiving deliveries, checking goods against delivery notes, unloading lorries, booking stock into the system, and ensuring everything arriving at the warehouse is accurate and accounted for.
Shift Patterns:
  • Early morning or day shifts (deliveries arrive early)
  • Monday-Friday most common
  • Occasional Saturday work
Experience Needed: None. Training on systems and procedures provided.
Perfect For: Reliable, punctual people who like variety and working as part of a team.
  • Pay: £12.21-£13.00 per hour
Young warehouse team leader supervising team and organizing daily warehouse operations Progression Role
👥 WAREHOUSE TEAM LEADER
What You'll Do: Leading a small team of warehouse operatives, organizing daily tasks, supporting team members, reporting to management, and ensuring targets are met safely and efficiently.
Shift Patterns:
  • Varies depending on team (days, afternoons, nights)
  • Supervisory responsibility across shift
Experience Needed: 6-12 months warehouse experience preferred. Leadership or supervisory experience helpful but not essential.
Perfect For: Ambitious workers ready to take the next step. This is where Youth Start placements can progress to within 6-12 months.
  • Pay: £13.50-£14.50 per hour
